Eugenia Zukerman’s Review of Live At St. James
“This is a sensational CD! With brilliant arrangements for this fine orchestra of flutes, the music takes on vibrant new colors, textures and effects.
The Song of the Angels Orchestra gives the “Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis/Vaughn Williams” a truly ethereal performance. The ensemble is beautifully balanced and plays with elegance and beauty. Concert Master Frederick Staff’s tone is rich and warm, and he leads this group of superb players.
“Into the Path” is an eerie and gleaming piece, and the haunting lower flutes (bass, Contrabass in F and Contrabass in C) add a depth and resonance that make the work shimmer.
Ravel’s “Mother’s Goose Suite” has a charm and delicacy. “The Swan of Tuonela” by Sibelius resonates with the icy glare of Finland with gorgeous and precise ensemble from all the flutes and Dvorak’s “Valse” has delightful grace and charm.
David Shostac’s arrangement of Messiaen’s “Le Merle Noir” is a revelation. Written for flute and piano, it takes on a totally new and vibrant sound with the flute orchestra –Shostac uses the diverse flutes of SOA to great affect, adding a whole new palette of colors. His flute playing here (and throughout the recording) is nuanced and thrilling, and with the accompanying flock of flutes for Messaien’s Blackbird, listening is like being in a huge aviary where birds dive and float and fight and soar and enchant.
Samuel Barber’s iconic “Adagio for Strings” is even more powerful played by SOA. Somehow the resonance of the flutes’ sonorities brings out the poignance and visceral pain of loss one senses listening to this great work.
The performances of all the works are terrific –wonderful solo playing by Maria Ramey, and David Shostac, but first rate playing by every member of this exciting orchestra.
“Live” is an exquisite and astonishing recording!”

Eugenia Zukerman’s Review of Vivaldi Flute Concertos, featuring David Shostac as Solo Flute/Piccolo with Song of Angels Flute Orchestra
Vivaldi Flute Concertos, featuring David Shostac as solo flute/piccolo with the Song of Angels Flute Orchestra, is as dazzling as it is delightful. The timbres and surprises of hearing an orchestra of flutes work perfectly for Vivaldi’s settings and, with the superb flutist David Shostac as soloist, this CD is a treasure. Shostac’s range of colors, his embellishments and his gorgeous tone are simply astonishing. The blending of sounds from the various flutes, from piccolo to double contra bass, is masterful. This is truly a recording that fulfills the mission of this special orchestra — it brings “joy and comfort to others through beautiful music.”
